Dean Fitzpatrick honored with new lecture series at Bryn Mawr Hospital

Thanks to the generosity of Dr. J. Brien Murphy and his wife Maggie, nurses and colleagues from Bryn Mawr Hospital and other Main Line Health institutions, as well as those from ֱ University College of Nursing, enjoyed the inaugural Dr. Louise Fitzpatrick Lecture on November 7 in Bryn Mawr Hospital’s Pennypacker Auditorium with speaker and ֱ Nursing alumna Kathryn Bowles ’90 MSN, PhD, RN, FAAN, FACMI. The lecture series was established in recognition of M. Louise Fitzpatrick, EdD, RN, FAAN, Connelly Endowed Dean and Professor of Nursing.
Dr. Bowles addressed “Innovations in Discharge Planning: The Three Rights of Post-acute Care,” discussing her nearly 20 year research journey that started with a clinical question and led to launching a business to ensure that hospitalized patients are properly identified and referred for post-acute care to avoid poor discharge outcomes. She is vanAmeringen Professor in Nursing Excellence and director, Center for Integrative Science in Aging at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing and vice president and director of the Center for Home Care Policy and Research for the Visiting Nurse Service of New York.
Dr. Murphy was a surgeon at Bryn Mawr Hospital for many years and is a member of its Gerhard Society Committee as well as a former member of the College of Nursing’s Board of Consultors. In 2016, he and his wife established the Dr. Louise Fitzpatrick Lecture in Nursing Endowment Fund in honor of Dean Fitzpatrick and her “extraordinary career in nursing education.” The educational lecture will be held annually and will benefit and support Bryn Mawr Hospital nursing staff, nurse leaders and special guests.
