Flynn Fellowship Supports Oncology Externship

'

The College of Nursing announces a new eight-week externship opportunity: the Susan D. Flynn Oncology Nursing Fellowship, named in memory of the wife of Stamford, Conn., businessman Frederick C. Flynn Jr. She died in 2013 following a three-year battle with ovarian cancer. The summer fellowship is offered to a rising senior. The College’s inaugural fellow is NyAsia White of Upper Darby, Pa., who was selected after a competitive process.

This oncology nursing externship program—one of about 10 in the country—partners top nursing schools with top hospitals. In this region, it involves a relationship with the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) and the schools of nursing at ֱ and Penn.

"I am very excited for the fellowship," says NyAsia, "Not only am I interested in the care of oncology patients and the services that are used to help diagnosis and manage their health, I am also interested in being a supportive figure in their lives."

The fellowship was created to stimulate the career interest and foster the professional development of potential oncology nurses by:

• enhancing the student’s core clinical education through direct observation of oncology patient care and exposure to related patient care duties and services that typify oncology nurses’ valuable role and important inter-relationships with other members of the health-care team and

• providing opportunities to attend various pertinent internal educational programs and meetings with key staff members at HUP that extend additional learning experiences for the student.

During the fellowship, students will be mentored by nurses, have special observational experiences and complete a research or quality improvement project.
