NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates

The (REU) program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program.

An REU Site consists of a group of ten or so undergraduates who work in the research programs of the host institution. Each student is associated with a specific research project, where he/she works closely with the faculty and other researchers. Students are granted stipends and, in many cases, assistance with housing and travel.

Penn SUIP

The is designed to provide an intense research experience to students interested in graduate study in the biomedical sciences. Each intern is matched with a faculty mentor from the Biomedical Graduate Studies program at the University of Pennsylvania. Interns participate in the ongoing research of the investigator's laboratory and perform a specific, supervised research project related to the goals of the laboratory.

  • 10 weeks of laboratory research, 40 hours per week
  • Attend Leadership Alliance National Symposium
  • Present research at the SUIP Research Symposium at the end of the program
  • Career counseling sessions delivered by faculty and administrators
  • $5,500 stipend, on-campus housing and meals, round-trip transportation
  • Eligibility at a glance:
    • Preference is given to applicants who will have completed their sophomore or junior year
    • Graduating seniors are not eligible
