About the Provost

Patrick G. Maggitti, PhD, Provost

As chief academic officer I am committed to the pursuit of excellence in ÄÌÌÇÖ±²¥â€™s undergraduate, graduate and professional education and in faculty scholarship and research. I know that our faculty and students across all degree levels, share in this vision of pedagogical excellence.

ÄÌÌÇÖ±²¥ University is dedicated to creating the highest quality, student-centered undergraduate educational experience, with a focus on teaching, inter-disciplinary collaboration, service, and research. Here, undergraduates work alongside with teacher-scholars and graduate students in pursuit of innovation, enlightenment and scholarship.

Our strong commitment to our Augustinian tradition is evident in all aspects of ÄÌÌÇÖ±²¥â€™s teaching, scholarship and service. Our guiding principles of Veritas, Unitas and Caritas – truth, unity and love – are interwoven into the ÄÌÌÇÖ±²¥ experience. As Provost of ÄÌÌÇÖ±²¥, Patrick G. Maggitti, PhD, serves as the number two officer of the University and its Chief Academic Officer. He leads ÄÌÌÇÖ±²¥â€™s overall strategic efforts and oversees the University’s academic enterprise—which encompasses the six colleges and all academic areas, including Faculty, Graduate and Undergraduate Research, Enrollment Management, Falvey Library and the Career Center, among others—as well as Student Life.

During his time as Provost, Dr. Maggitti led ÄÌÌÇÖ±²¥â€™s move from a regional master’s to a national doctoral-granting institution including the University’s ranking as a top National University by U.S. News. He led the process for the University’s current strategic plan—Rooted. Restless.—and has been a central figure in the University’s general, budgetary and fundraising activities. Dr. Maggitti also was the founding and inaugural chair of the BIG EAST Conference Provosts' Group.

Dr. Maggitti previously served as the Helen and William O’Toole Dean of the ÄÌÌÇÖ±²¥ School of Business, spearheading its 2015 ranking as the #1 undergraduate business school in the U.S. by BloombergBusinessweek. A faculty member at the University since 2008, he holds the rank of Professor of Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship, and is the founder and former Carmen and Sharon Danella Director of the ÄÌÌÇÖ±²¥ Center for Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship (now the Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship).

A widely recognized scholar in entrepreneurship and strategic management, Dr. Maggitti has authored numerous publications for premier journals such as Research Policy, Journal of Management Studies and the Academy of Management Journal, widely considered the field’s most elite research publication. He also is cited and published in numerous popular media outlets. His research interests focus on two areas: The dynamic nature of competition between organizations; and the manner in which executive and top manager’s characteristics, processes and behaviors influence strategic decision-making, innovation, creative problem-solving and financial performance.

Prior to academia, Dr. Maggitti spent nearly 15 years in the steel and mining industries, where he founded two successful companies and held a variety of roles, including chief executive officer, director of national sales and board member. He also has consulted with a variety of organizations on various facets of strategy, innovation, and entrepreneurial thinking.

Dr. Maggitti received a BS in Chemistry from Saint Joseph’s University; an MBA with high honors from the Johns Hopkins University; and a PhD in Strategic Management from the University of Maryland.
