What is Faculty Congress?
The Faculty Congress is an organization constituted by the faculty of ÄÌÌÇÖ±²¥ University for the purposes of discussing all matters of interest to the faculty and, where appropriate, passing resolutions expressing its opinion on such matters. What does it mean to be in an APC Faculty Congress seat? (or RPC or FRRC, etc.)
It means you are elected to a two year term as a member of both the Faculty Congress and the designated committee. Elected members of APC, FRRC, or RPC are also members of the Faculty Congress and attend the Congress meetings. This structure helps facilitate communication among/across different committees on campus with faculty representation.
What is the time commitment for one of these positions?
The term is two years. The Faculty Congress meets about three times each semester, and most of the committees meet two to three times each semester, so if you serve on a committee you will have about 8-10 hours of meetings per semester.
What is APC (Academic Policy Committee) and how often does it meet?
The Academic Policy Committee recommends policy in academic matters affecting more than one college. It meets about three times each semester.
What is RPC (Research Policy Committee) and how often does it meet?
The Research Policy Committee recommends policies related to research policy, grant administration, strategic plans, and other matters relating to research and research education that significantly affect the University as a whole. It meets about one to three times per semester.
What is FRRC (Faculty Rights and Responsibilities Committee) and how often does it meet?
The Faculty Rights & Responsibilities Committee (FRRC) makes recommendations on all matters pertaining to faculty. In particular, it oversees and approves any changes to the Faculty Handbook. It meets about three times each semester.
Can I nominate myself or someone else for more than one seat?
Yes, a person may run for more than one seat (we encourage this). A person cannot serve in more than one seat, so if the person is elected to more than one seat, the person must decide which seat they will serve in. The other seat would then be filled by the runner-up.
What qualifies as Humanities, Social Science, or Science?
HUMANITIES: English, Ethics, History, Humanities & Classics, GIS, Philosophy, Romance Lang & Lit, Theatre, Theology
SOCIAL SCIENCE: Communication, Education & Counseling, Psychology, Political Science, Sociology & Criminology, Public Administration
SCIENCE: Astrophysics and Planetary Sciences, Biology, Chemistry, Computing Science, Geography & the Environment, Math & Stat, Physics
I am a Continuing Nontenure Track (CNT) faculty. What seats can I run for?
CNT faculty can run for any seat not reserved for tenured or adjunct or retired faculty.
How many years of service at ÄÌÌÇÖ±²¥ are required to run for Faculty Congress?
For most seats except those designated for adjuncts, the nominee must be a full time faculty member. Faculty are eligible to run for and serve on Faculty Congress during or after their sixth continuous semester as faculty at the University, except for the three at-large faculty seats. Faculty are eligible for the at-large seats during or after their third continuous semester as faculty at the University.
