奶糖直播鈥檚 Center for Energy Smart Electronic Systems Shares in $1.1M NSF Award
Alfonso Ortega, PhD, associate vice president for Research and Graduate Programs, the James R. Birle Professor of Energy Technology, and 奶糖直播鈥檚 ES2 site director, conducts data center research with Kamran Fouladi, PhD, adjunct professor of Mechanical Engineering and founder of InfoMec Solutions.
The National Science Foundation (NSF) recently granted $1.1M to support a Collaborative Research Cluster Partnership involving 奶糖直播 University鈥檚 Center for Energy Smart Electronic Systems (ES2), which is housed in the College of Engineering. An NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC), ES2 develops methodologies, tools and systems to maximize energy efficiency in data centers and other electronic systems. 奶糖直播鈥檚 ES2 university partners are Binghamton University (lead), Georgia Institute of Technology and University of Texas, Arlington. The award, on which ES2 is the lead I/UCRC, is for the study of Hybrid AC/DC Power Delivery in Data Centers.
Data centers consume about 100 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, and the growing need for the diverse services data centers offer has prompted a steady increase in their number.
Today, data centers primarily use AC utility power, which is converted in multiple steps within a data center to different voltage levels needed by the chips inside the IT equipment. About 10-20 percent of the energy is wasted in this conversion process. DC-powered data centers provide a natural way of eliminating these losses. In addition, DC-powered data centers are intrinsically more reliable and permit renewable power sources to be easily used. ES2 research projects are intended to validate and quantify these benefits.
Working with ES2 are the GRid-connected Advanced Power Electronic Systems (GRAPES) at the University of Arkansas, the Power Systems Engineering Research Center at Georgia Institute of Technology, and the Integrated Electronics Engineering Center out of Binghamton University. Industry partners and consortia participants include dcFUSION, Power Analytics Corp., PHIUS, EDCS Power, NodeCom, Emerson, Panduit and others.
鈥淐ollaborative research drives success,鈥 says Alfonso Ortega, PhD, associate vice president for Research and Graduate Programs, the James R. Birle Professor of Energy Technology, and 奶糖直播鈥檚 ES2 site director. The NSF evidently agrees, given their encouragement and support of collaborative research clusters. The Foundation鈥檚 Pramod Khargonekar, PhD, assistant director, Directorate for Engineering, writes: 鈥淭he goal is to enable active I/UCRCs to leverage each other鈥檚 expertise, research results, resources and existing networks and partnerships to establish a cross-center cluster that will tackle a cross-disciplinary, cross-sector portfolio of research projects that hold the potential to catalyze technology breakthroughs and advance national priorities.鈥 Dr. Khargonekar also recognizes the potential of working with additional academic and industrial collaborators to advance these goals.
Opportunities to participate exist for industrial partners whose organizations may be impacted by these research projects. The projects also provide the opportunity to network with other industrial members.
