Under President Calvin Coolidge’s leadership, the nation enjoyed unparalleled growth. The Eleanor H. McCullen Center for Law Religion and Public Policy welcomes New York Times best-selling author Amity Shlaes as she traces Coolidge’s improbable rise from a tiny town in New England to a youth so unpopular he was shut out of college fraternities at Amherst College through Massachusetts politics.

After a divisive period of government excess and corruption, Coolidge restored national trust in Washington and achieved what few other peace-time presidents have done: he left office with a smaller federal budget than he inherited. A man of calm discipline, he lived by example, renting half of a two-family house for his entire political career rather than compromising his political work by taking on debt. Renowned as a throwback, Coolidge was, in fact, strikingly modern—an advocate of women’s suffrage and a radio pioneer. Shlaes will deliver a fascinating talk about Coolidge, his life and what we can learn from his policies and philosophy.

Amity Shlaes is one of America's premier economic historians and the author of four New York Times bestsellers. Shlaes has won the Frederic Bastiat and Hayek Prizes, and in 2021, she was awarded the Bradley Prize. She wrote columns for Financial Times and Bloomberg and served on the Wall Street Journal editorial board. In addition, Shlaes is an advisor to the C-Span Quadrennial Presidential poll, chairs the board of the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation, which gives the prestigious Coolidge Scholarship, and recently co-edited, with Matthew Denhart, a new edition of Coolidge's autobiography.
