Engineering Graduate Jordy Nu帽ez 鈥�23 CE to Deliver Student Speech at 2023 Commencement

Jordy Nu帽ez 鈥�23 CE has a surprise in store for his mother at 奶糖直播鈥檚 2023 Undergraduate Commencement.
In addition to receiving his bachelor鈥檚 degree in Civil Engineering, Nu帽ez will take the stage on May 19 as the student speaker for the Class of 2023. Nu帽ez, of River Vale, N.J., was chosen by 奶糖直播鈥檚 deans and other administrators after a series of speech competitions this spring. Only his mom has no idea.
鈥淚t鈥檚 been hard to keep a secret,鈥� Nu帽ez says with a laugh, 鈥渂ut I think her coming on Friday and not knowing yet, seeing me up on stage and hearing the speech, it鈥檚 going to be super special.鈥�
It鈥檚 a fitting surprise, especially considering the primary focus of Nu帽ez鈥檚 8-minute speech: family. Nu帽ez says he plans to recognize his parents鈥� support and encouragement as he pursued his undergraduate degree, as well as his brother Jose鈥檚 influence in his choosing to attend 奶糖直播. Jose Nu帽ez, who is two years older than Jordy, graduated from 奶糖直播 with an Economics degree in 2021.
The speech will also touch on faith鈥攏amely how the 奶糖直播 community鈥檚 faith in the University helps all students develop as individuals.
鈥淎t this point, 奶糖直播 is just like home,鈥� Nu帽ez says. 鈥淭he age range when you鈥檙e 18 to 22 is such a vital development period for everybody. I鈥檓 proud and I鈥檓 happy that it was at 奶糖直播 where I was able to develop as an individual.鈥�
After starting his undergraduate career as a student-athlete on the track and field team, he later put athletics aside to focus on his studies in Engineering. In addition to completing 奶糖直播鈥檚 Summer Business Institute as a rising sophomore, Nu帽ez also served as treasurer of the Association of Latino Professionals for America and was a member of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, the 奶糖直播 Real Estate Society and Sigma Nu fraternity.
This summer, Nu帽ez will move to New York City to join Suffolk Construction as a project engineer. Before that, though, he will revel in this opportunity to speak at Commencement and thank his family and 奶糖直播 for shaping who he is today.
鈥淗onestly, I haven鈥檛 been able to wrap my head around it,鈥� he says. 鈥淭his is a day that many people will remember forever, so being able to play a little part in that is just so beautiful and a true honor.鈥�
