The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion believes that all teaching and learning experiences should affirm the dignity and humanity of all people and develop a critical consciousness to the world around us. Our community grows when we deepen our understanding through diverse perspectives and apply that knowledge to daily practice.

The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion offers various educational opportunities for faculty and staff that encourage self-reflection, understanding and individual growth. The Education and Training Pillar offers the Advancing Equity and Justice Curriculum and additional advanced single sessions. We look forward to engaging with our community.

ADVANCING EQUITY & JUSTICE CURRICULUM

This curriculum is designed to provide an educational track of foundational concepts and unified language to our ÄÌÌÇÖ±²¥ community based on current research and best practices to support our aspiration of becoming an antiracist institution.

The core component of the curriculum is a four-module scaffolded series. Participants will attend each module in the series in succession. Once completed, participants will receive a certificate of completion from ODEI. Participants will have one term year (ex: Fall 2022 to Fall 2023) to complete the four modules. The Fall 2023 modules are listed below. Find module dates, times, and locations, and . Please use the Curriculum Reflection Guide found on  to accompany your in-session education. 

SESSION OVERVIEWS & DATES

Rooted (Module 1): In this session, participants will orient their engagement with the curriculum through connection to our Augustinian Values and what it means to be just in our equity and inclusion efforts. Rooted in our institutional mission, participants will explore how we, as a community and as individuals, begin the journey of showing up for others with examination of self.

This session is completely virtual and accessed on . Module 1 is available online and must be completed before attending Module 2.

Being (Module 2): In this session, participants will interrogate what it means to live in a socialized world and critique its implications for equitable and just human experiences. Participants will examine to what extent we have learned to be, how we learned it, and who taught it to us.

This session is open to participants who have completed Module 1.

Existing (Module 3): In this session, participants will gain deeper understanding of systems of power’s influence on socialization in a US context. Participants will explore how their multiple identities grant them protection or leave them vulnerable to systems of power and how their experience within them shapes their point of view.

This session is open to participants who have completed Module 1 and Module 2.

Action (Module 4): In this session, participants will workshop the application of the curriculum into their everyday reality. Through interactive scenarios, participants will develop skills for moving through the barriers that hold us back from action.

ADVANCED SESSIONS

SESSION OVERVIEW & DATES

Supporting from Identities: LGBTQ+ Identities | Transgender & Gender Nonbinary Identities | Disability Identities | Neurodivergent Identities

In these sessions, faculty and staff will engage with a deeper understanding of (1) the major forms of oppression those holding minoritized identities face, (2) relevant community terminology, and (3) intentional advocacy. Participants will explore this within an intersectional context to enhance the understanding of the multiple dimensions of identities and experiences. The Supporting from Identities series provides space for participants to consider their role and responsibility in a creating a just and equitable community through an antiracist lens. 

These sessions are open to participants who have completed the Advancing Equity and Justice Curriculum (4 Modules).

Community Foundations

This foundational professional development series is intended to create space for staff to learn about, discuss, and explore a more inclusive ÄÌÌÇÖ±²¥. The program includes 3 LinkedIn Learning modules: How to Be More Inclusive, Communicating about Culturally Sensitive Issues, Dealing with Microaggressions as an Employee and 1 live facilitated discussion session.
